Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

Pluses:

  • More variety and choice
  • Suit the individuals capabilities
  • Choice of what gets developed
  • Versatile e.g: easy to upload a photo on a computer and email
  • Adapt e.g: Photoshop
  • Able to make many copies e.g: c.d, hardcopy on computer and flash stick

Minuses:

· Older technology has faded out

· Limited opportunity

· Unable to use a dark room to create photos as meaningful occupation

· Different quality

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Stored transferred: d.v.d, c.d, flash stick, cell phones, computer, websites, and developed

Manipulated:

  • Photoshop and other computer programmes
  • instant printing facilities where photos can be adapted

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

  • Copyright
  • Once an image or email is sent there is no way to retrieve if accidentally sent
  • Inappropriate images displayed on the internet
  • Privacy

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.

  • Teaching techniques
  • Visual examples
  • Home visits, housing modifications
  • Progress
  • Client occupation, e.g meaningful activity

Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom

“A optical zoom uses the lenses to focus in on a subject, pretty much the same way binoculars work. Digital zoom magnifies the subject by enlarging in the picture through a digital process; this is not a true type of zoom.” Retrieved form www.wiki.answers.com on 03 June 2008

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel

“One million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a graphics device, such as a scanner, digital camera or monitor.” Retrieved from www.webopedia.com on 03 June 2008
