Tutorial Three: Blog Creation Tasks

Task One: Follow instructions to set up a account with Blogger

This will involve setting up a Google account (make note of your user name and password)

Task Two: Follow instructions to complete the following Blog construction tasks

  • Choose a Blog Template (this can be changed later if you wish)
  • Provide a Blog title (this will need to incorporate your name and the course title Participation in Occupation 1)
  • Provide a Blog outline. This is a short statement outlining the purpose of the Blog (this information should come from the course outline and assessment guidelines for Participation in Occupation 1).
  • Complete your Blog profile (you need to include your age, gender, industry, occupation and location)
  • Up load a photo to your Blog profile

Task Three: Follow instructions to start posting content. Your first two post should be taken from the technical descriptions for tutorials one and two.

Task Four: Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Blogger (this will be your third posting. Information can be drawn from the attached hand out). In addition to this name one other Blog host.

Description of Service. Blogger is a web publishing service and optional hosting service (the "Service"). You will be responsible for all activities occurring under your username and for keeping your password secure. You understand and agree that the Service is provided to you on an AS IS and AS AVAILABLE basis. Google disclaims all responsibility and liability for the availability, timeliness, security or reliability of the Service or any other client software. Google also reserves the right to modify, suspend or discontinue the Service with or without notice at any time and without any liability to you.

You must be at least thirteen (13) years of age to use the Service. Google reserves the right to refuse service to anyone at any time without notice for any reason.”

Task Five: Upload 5 photos from tutorial 5 onto your flickr account.

Any remaining time can be spent

· Exploring Blogs hosted by Blogger and other services (e.g.myspace)

· Setting up a personal Blog

· Organising your flickr account into groups

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

Pluses:

  • More variety and choice
  • Suit the individuals capabilities
  • Choice of what gets developed
  • Versatile e.g: easy to upload a photo on a computer and email
  • Adapt e.g: Photoshop
  • Able to make many copies e.g: c.d, hardcopy on computer and flash stick

Minuses:

· Older technology has faded out

· Limited opportunity

· Unable to use a dark room to create photos as meaningful occupation

· Different quality

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Stored transferred: d.v.d, c.d, flash stick, cell phones, computer, websites, and developed

Manipulated:

  • Photoshop and other computer programmes
  • instant printing facilities where photos can be adapted

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

  • Copyright
  • Once an image or email is sent there is no way to retrieve if accidentally sent
  • Inappropriate images displayed on the internet
  • Privacy

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.

  • Teaching techniques
  • Visual examples
  • Home visits, housing modifications
  • Progress
  • Client occupation, e.g meaningful activity

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com

Flickr - has two main goals:

1. They “want to help people make their content available to the people who matter to them.”

2. They “want to enable new ways of organizing photos and video.”

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com

  • Snapfish
  • Fotki
  • Donation details
  • PhotoGalaxy

Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom

“A optical zoom uses the lenses to focus in on a subject, pretty much the same way binoculars work. Digital zoom magnifies the subject by enlarging in the picture through a digital process; this is not a true type of zoom.” Retrieved form www.wiki.answers.com on 03 June 2008

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel

“One million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a graphics device, such as a scanner, digital camera or monitor.” Retrieved from www.webopedia.com on 03 June 2008

Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Provide a definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology (APA reference required)

“Information Technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.” Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

It has become very common in today’s society “IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases” Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

I.T helps to; produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.

Computers and information are linked

What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?

  • I feel competent and comfortable using computers in a basic manner, such as sending an email and research.
  • Flash sticks
  • Online shopping

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?

  • Communication devices (microphone attached to wheelchair)
  • Computer used to do research
  • Driving simulators
  • Client database-client notes, appointments
  • Digital cameras; Images used for teaching purposes. Eg: step by step visual instructions.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. internet)

  • Copyright
  • Once an image or email is sent there is no way to retrieve if accidentally sent
  • Inappropriate images displayed on the internet
  • Privacy

Provide a definition of Computer Ethics (APA reference required)

“Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct. The term "computer ethics" was first coined by Walter Maner[1] in the mid-1970s, but only since the 1990s has it started being integrated into professional development programs in academic settings. The conceptual foundations of computer ethics are investigated by information ethics, a branch of philosophical ethics established by Luciano Floridi. Computer ethics is a very important topic in computer applications.

The importance of computer ethics increased through the 1990s. With the growth of the Internet, privacy issues as well as concerns regarding computing technologies such as spyware and web browser cookies have called into question ethical behavior in technology.” Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

Provide a definition of Intellectual Property (APA reference required)

Intellectual property (IP) is a legal field that refers to creations of the mind such as musical, literary, and artistic works; inventions; and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce, including copyrights, trademarks, patents, and related rights. Under intellectual property law, the holder of one of these abstract "properties" has certain exclusive rights to the creative work, commercial symbol, or invention by which it is covered. Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

Provide a definition of Social Justice (APA reference required)

Social justice refers to the concept of a society in which justice is achieved in every aspect of society, rather than merely the administration of law. It is generally thought of as a world which affords individuals and groups fair treatment and an impartial share of the benefits of society. (Different proponents of social justice have developed different interpretations of what constitutes fair treatment and an impartial share.) It can also refer to the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society. Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

Provide a definition of Informed Consent (APA reference required)

Informed consent is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon an appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action. The individual needs to be in possession of relevant facts and also of his or her reasoning faculties, such as not being mentally retarded or mentally ill and without an impairment of judgment at the time of consenting. Such impairments might include illness, intoxication, insufficient sleep, and other health problems. Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 04 June 2008

In your own words briefly summarise why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.

An understanding of ITC and ethical issues we will be enable us to use these technologies correctly and comfortably and help us to make appropriate decisions when using these technologies. With knowledge we are able to have a clear understanding of the impact on our actions. It allows us to stay confidential when appropriate.

Tutorial Eight: Assistive technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology (your Cook and Hussey reading may be helpful with this).

“Assistive technology is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices and the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. Although, Cook & Hussey (2001)[1] report this term is usually not used for rehabilitative devices and for devices that able-bodied find useful. According to disability advocates, technology is often created without regard to people with disabilities, creating unnecessary barriers to hundreds of millions of people.”

Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org on 06June 2008

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions.

‘Go talk’ is a communication and educational tool that records speech and plays it back with a touch button. It can be taken anywhere, school, work, home, and the playground. It’s light and easy to use. The user recognises the intent of each recorded message by the pictures or words on a slide-in overlay. When each picture is touched a message is played.

Go talk has three primary uses. First, as an augmentative communication device. Here, a user “speaks” by playing the appropriate message. “I’d like to order a Big Mac and large fries please.” Second to cue someone on what to do next, or what to will be needed for an activity: “Put lunch and homework in your backpack before the bus comes” Third, as a learning tool that compliments and reinforces an educational curriculum. “Six plus nine equals?” In practice, you’ll find these uses will overlap.

The ‘Go talk’ comes in different sizes and at different costs, however an example of one size is 9” x 12” x 7/8” and this costs $179.00 USA dollars.

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user? Provide examples here from the tutorial and lecture.

  • It enables them to communicate with others
  • augmentative communication device
  • cue someone on what to do next, or what to will be needed for an activity
  • learning tool that compliments and reinforces an educational curriculum

Task Four (Blog Posting): Provide a brief summary of the services offered by U Tube. Information can be drawn from the week five tutorial hand out.

“YouTube is the leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on http://www.youtube.com/ and across the Internet through websites, mobile devices, blogs, and email.
Everyone can watch videos on YouTube. People can see first-hand accounts of current events, find videos about their hobbies and interests, and discover the quirky and unusual. As more people capture special moments on video, YouTube is empowering them to become the broadcasters of tomorrow.” Retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/ on the 24th of May

You tube is a free service for anyone with internet access to use.

Task Five (Blog Posting): Provide a brief account (1-2 paragraphs) on how the use of planning (storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.

Using the storyboard allowed our group to all work together to come up with a plan that showed each scene in our short film. This meant that all group members had a clear visual script that they could refer to and no scenes would be forgotten.

This aid applies well to the VARK learning theory. Visual, aural, reader/writer and kinaesthetic. It caters well for different learning needs within a group, Visual; see the plan of action, aural; discussion of each scene, reader/writer; room to make written notes, Kinaesthetic; acting out the scenes.

The storyboard allows all group members to be clear on the scene order which assists with good time management, clear roles and participation.

Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

Either search online for a community which interest you or choose one of the provided online communities to investigate. Make sure your selected a community that comprises some form of online forum, discussion page or chat room. You may also wish to see if your community has a Wikipedia entry.

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating

www.kapitiharriers.org.nz

What is the brief or focus of this community

The Kapiti Harriers club organises a range of sporting events such as road races, triathlons, mountain racing, kayaking, cross-country, walking, duathlons, cycling and multi-sport events.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

The service provides a syllabus for 2008 events, results, information, entry forms for up and coming events, club archives and summaries on the previous events that have being held.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

Why people choose to contribute to a community can be:

• Find it addictive
• Anticipated reciprocity
• Increased recognition
• Sense of community
Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).
“Club runs are held on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings, sometimes both.
The syllabus provides information on club activities throughout the season.”
“The club caters for serious athletes (members have competed at Olympic and World Championship
triathlon and duathlon races), also for average competitors (such as your web editor, who tries his
best, sometimes surprising himself and others) and social athletes.”
Retrieved from (www.kapitiharriers.org.nz) on the 23rd of May2008

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

The potential ethical issues:
• Results are not private, they are available for the public to view
Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity

Benefits:
• Able to retrieve large amounts of information
• Connect with others in different locations
• Same or similar interests
• Can foster understanding and unity
• Free service
• Silent observation
• Fast way to receive information
Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.

• It does not provide detail
• Does not provide instant results
• Limited communication tools
• Requires someone to maintain and manage site
